Oregon High School is performing this year’s spring musical The Drowsy Chaperone from March 7th - March 10th in the Oregon High School auditorium, Room 106. The first three nights of the show (Thursday - Saturday) will start at 7:00pm, and the Sunday matinee will start at 2:00pm. The seating will be general admission and tickets will only be available at the door. The doors will open 30 minutes prior to each performance. Tickets cost $10 for adults and $8 for students.

The Drowsy Chaperone, written by Lisa Lambert, Greg Morrison, Bob Martin, and Don McKellar is coined as a musical within a comedy, which is apparent from the very start of the production. The audience is introduced to a man in his apartment, looking to enjoy a quiet evening alone. As an informed lover of musicals, he turns to his favorite 1920’s era record, The Drowsy Chaperone. As the man and the audience watch the record come to life on stage, an exciting plot begins to unravel. Famous actress, Janet Van De Graff is to be married to her fiancé Robert Martin. However, there are several forces determined to prevent this marriage from taking place. Meanwhile, the man in his apartment is more than happy to pause to poke fun at ridiculous scenes and reflect on poignant ones.

The group of OHS students that make up this cast are extremely talented and have been working on the show since the beginning of January. They are supported by a pit orchestra consisting of high school students, school faculty, and local musicians. Please consider supporting our students and our community by coming out for a night of engaging and witty fun!

Oregon Music Students Hope to Continue Success

Congratulations to the music students in the Oregon School District who took part in the district and state festivals this past winter. Oregon High School and David L. Rahn Jr. High had 25 students who made the all-district band and choir through the Illinois Music Education Association (ILMEA). Those students represented District 8 at its festival and concert at DeKalb High School in November. Of those students, Oregon High School was represented by three at the ILMEA All-State Festival in Peoria, IL on January 24th – 26th: Lydia Cermak played horn in the All-State Band, Tessa Burger sang in the All-State Choir, and Brigham Finch participated in the Future Music Educator’s Seminar.

OHS senior, Tessa Burger, said of her second year at the all-state festival: “It’s great making music with people you know; but connecting with complete strangers and forming such a strong bond in three days through music is an indescribable feeling. Only an experience like all-state can make that possible.” OHS first-year choir director, Zach Hall, noted “I was very proud of our students for both the level of professionalism that they showed at the festival and for the quality with which they performed. They represented OHS very well.”

Aside from the ILMEA festivals, OHS was also represented by students at the Big Northern Conference music festival and the Augustana College Honor Band festival on Martin Luther King Jr. weekend. All of these festivals are annual events for the Oregon music program, making for a very busy winter.

Coming up, the music program has a number of exciting events through the end of the year. Be sure to catch some of these in the next couple months:

  • Saturday, Feb. 23: DLR Solo/Ensemble Contest at Stillman
  • Saturday, Mar. 2: OHS Solo/Ensemble Contest at West Carroll
  • 7-10: OHS Spring Musical “The Drowsy Chaperone”
  • Thursday, Mar. 14 at 7:00pm in BHC: 25th Annual Band Extravaganza*
