Oregon music students had a very successful day on March 7th at their IHSA Solo and Ensemble contest in Mount Carroll. For this competition, students sing in solos and small groups and receive ratings from judges on their performances. There were numerous “Best of Day” awards given to Oregon students, including: Asher Kramer (trombone solo), Yovanni Carreno (tuba solo - perfect score), Collin Kendall (string bass solo - perfect score), David Eckardt (snare drum solo - perfect score), and David Eckardt and Ethan Rowe (percussion duet). Additional perfect scores include Sarah Eckardt on her trumpet solo and Will Baldwin on his vocal solo. Overall, the band is tied for first place out of all Class B school bands in Illinois and the choir is in second place for Class B school choirs in Illinois. Combined as a music program, Oregon is currently in second place for Class B schools in the state! In total, the school scored 687 points at this event, which is the highest they have scored in this millennium. IHSA music sweepstakes placements will be final after the IHSA Music Organizational Contest this upcoming April 17th, when the Oregon band and choir will perform as full ensembles in Lena-Winslow for judges.

The Sound of Music wrapped up this afternoon with their fourth and final show. Congratulations to the cast and crew on another great musical!

Please join OJSHS in celebrating our January Senior of Distinction - Matthew Pham
“Matthew exemplifies what it means to grow as a student from Freshman to Senior year. He is an extremely hard worker and sets his goals high. Having him as a student in the band since he was in 5th grade, it has been a privilege for me to see him grow and see his hard work pay off with positive results. Outside of his performance in the classroom, Matthew has also put service at the top of his list throughout high school. He never hesitates to step forward for volunteer jobs around the band room, the school, or out in the community. One may not know about all of this work he puts in or that he is an excellent musician, because Matthew is a very humble human being as well. It will be a sad day when he graduates from my band, but I'm excited to see what he will achieve in his future. I sincerely recommend Matthew Pham for this recognition.” –Mr. Andy Eckardt, OJSHS Teacher

Please join OJSHS in celebrating our December Senior of Distinction - Virginia Sowl
“I would like to recommend Virginia Sowl for the Senior of Distinction Award. Throughout her high school career, Virginia has consistently demonstrated exceptional character, leadership, and dedication to her community. With over 280 hours of documented community service, she has devoted a remarkable amount of time to helping others, both during the school year and throughout the summer. Whether she is volunteering at school events, supporting local organizations, or quietly stepping in wherever help is needed, Virginia can almost always be found serving her community with humility and enthusiasm.
Virginia’s dependability is one of her greatest strengths. When she commits to something, she follows through wholeheartedly. Teachers, peers, and community members know they can rely on her, and she approaches every task, big or small, with a positive attitude and genuine care for those around her. She is also kind, patient, and compassionate, qualities that make her an outstanding role model. Younger students look up to her example, and her peers value her steady presence and supportive nature.
In addition to her service, Virginia has shown tremendous resilience. Despite facing a few personal challenges over the past few years, she has remained focused on her goals and continued to excel academically. Her ability to maintain strong grades, stay involved, and uplift others during difficult times speaks volumes about her character and inner strength.” –Ms. Kim Radostits, OJSHS Teacher
